A Home Full of Memories: Celebrating Life’s Milestones

On the surface, it’s just another 1960s house, brick walls, a familiar street.

But inside, it’s a home. It has held 3 generations of stories, laughter, and

love.

Marking life’s transitions isn’t just about weddings and funerals. It’s about

celebrating the moments in between. And what could be more significant

than a home that has been in a family for decades, now passing to the next

generation?

This house became home in the 1960s when a young family moved in, full

of hope for the future. It was a place of childhood fun and laughter, playing

in the street until the streetlights came on, or mum shouted it was Tea time.

Building dens, hopscotch, marbles, and the unspoken rule: never go past

the grey electricity box! Sit on it, yes (Hate to think the health implications of

that now).

There were garage discos, jumble sales, and water fights. Rainy days

meant cutting out paper dolls, staring out the window, and waiting for the

sun to appear. No TV, no internet - just imagination.

Summers meant grandparents arriving and staying the whole summer,

curtains drawn tight while tennis and cricket took over the TV. Back then,

you had to feed a 50p coin into the side of the television to keep it running.

Kids' TV lasted less than an hour a day, so afternoons were spent raiding the sweet tin - mini chocolate bars, fruit chews, blackjacks, before heading back outside.

Meals were cooked from scratch, with veg boiled to oblivion. Christmas

mornings were a masterclass in patience, waiting for the household

matriarch to get up, put in her teeth, draw on her eyebrows, and have

breakfast before the present opening could begin.

Extensions were built, and life was happy.

When Dad died, the house stood firm and made sure life was constant and

secure.

Children grew up. One moved out, another moved in, bringing their own

mark (including painting a bedroom completely black!). Over the years, life

shifted, but the house remained a constant.

Eventually, a new generation came of age. A son who grew up here set his

sights on owning it. It was on his ‘spreadsheet of life,’ a goal he never

wavered from. And now, here he is, making it happen.

This home starts a new chapter, new hands on the bannister, new laughter in the rooms, new tiny feet learning to walk. And among them, the quiet presence of those no longer here but still part of the house.

As a celebrant, I mark transitions like these. Life isn’t just about big

moments. It’s about the homes and lives we build, the stories we carry and

share and how we honour the past while stepping into the future.

Why not celebrate a home? Every big shift deserves recognition. Moving in,

starting fresh, reflecting on the journey, these moments shape us as much

as weddings and farewells.

So, as this house begins its next chapter, may it be filled with love,

laughter, and family - just as it always has.

If you have a big life change, why not mark it with a ceremony? A celebrant
