Dogs at Weddings: Including Pets in Life's Most Important Moments

Writer: Sally LakenSally Laken

A few weeks ago, I lost my beloved Bubby Blue, my faithful bully dog who was more than just a pet—he was my companion, my confidant, and my world. The grief has been overwhelming, and words often feel inadequate to express the depth of my love for him. It’s a kind of love that transcends language, rooted deep in the heart, a bond that’s unbreakable even in his absence.

As I’ve been reflecting on our time together, one thought keeps resurfacing: he wasn’t there at my wedding. At the time, he was unwell, and we thought it was best for him to stay home and rest. But now, looking back, I feel a profound sense of regret. Bubby was my dearest friend and soul mate, and I missed the chance to have him by my side on one of the most important days of my life.

This realisation has led me to think deeply about the role our pets play in our lives, especially during significant milestones. They’re not just animals; they’re family, offering unconditional love and companionship. They’re there for us through the highs and lows, sharing in our joy and comforting us in our sorrows. So why should they be left out of our most meaningful celebrations?

As a wedding celebrant, I’ve come to see just how much our pets mean to us. They’re a part of our stories, woven into the fabric of our lives. Including them in ceremonies, whether it’s a wedding, a vow renewal, or any other significant event, can be a beautiful way to honor that bond. It’s a chance to celebrate the love and loyalty they give us, and to create memories that include every member of our family—furry ones included.

If you’re planning a ceremony and have an animal companion, I encourage you to consider including them, even if it’s just for a short while. Let them be part of your special day, whether it’s by walking down the aisle, being in your photos, or simply being present in some way. They belong there, just as they belong in your heart.

It would mean so much to me to help you find a way to include your pets in your ceremony. Together, we can create a moment that honors every member of your family, and ensures that no one is left out. After all, they give us so much love—why not let them share in our joy too?

In loving memory of Bubby Blue, and for all the pets who hold a special place in our hearts, let’s celebrate the bond we share with them in every way we can.
